Cerec filling
Remember that CEREC crowns are milled out of a single block of porcelain. Doing these well requires an exceptional amount of skill. There are some very skilled cosmetic dentists who are also able to create CEREC porcelain veneers. They are considerably more expensive than composite fillings, but are also more durable.

These CEREC crowns are milled out of pure ceramic.ĬEREC technology can also be used to manufacture porcelain fillings (porcelain inlays). With CEREC’s CAD-CAM technology, the crown is made by a computer while you wait, thus eliminating the second appointment and the temporary crown. This crown is milled by a computer to fit your tooth precisely, thus eliminating the laboratory step in manufacturing the crown. The cut-away ceramic covers the entire tooth, all the way around, usually down to the gumline.ĬEREC SAME-DAY CROWNS – Technology available in the offices of some cosmetic dentists enables them to provide “Computer-assisted design-Computer-assisted manufacture” crowns, or “CAD-CAM.” The company that is foremost in this technology is CEREC. The tooth is reduced in size to allow for complete coverage by the ceramic crown material. This diagram shows the concept of a dental crown. On your second appointment, the temporary is removed and the durable crown is placed on your tooth. Meanwhile, you wear a temporary crown made with some type of plastic material. An impression is taken of your teeth, and this impression is sent to a laboratory where your crown will be made. Inlays and onlays are more durable and long-lasting than composite fillings, and they provide a less invasive restoration than a dental crown. In contrast, a porcelain filling is created using CEREC technology, a computer-aided design and manufacturing system that we have in our office. Composites begin as a liquid, and are then hardened with a curing light. COMPOSITE RESIN COMPARED TO CEREC FILLINGSĪ composite resin filling is created from a tooth-colored plastic, which is placed into a prepared cavity to restore the tooth after decay is removed. Like porcelain crowns, porcelain fillings are made of a solid piece of porcelain. When a cavity is so large that a composite filling will not provide sufficient restoration, we often encourage the patient to opt for a porcelain filling, which is commonly called an inlay or onlay, or a three-quarter crown.
